Hi there,
Donn here from Sedona Harmony Hideaway Guest House. I have recently put together this list of my favorite things to do in Sedona. I'm certain many of them are on your checklist, but there may be some that you didn't know about. Enjoy…
So much to do in Sedona, so little time!
Hiking is one of the most popular things to do outdoors in Sedona! There are over 150 trails in the area and there are breathtaking views on all of them! (I have not been on all of them myself, but certainly a lot of them.) Here are a few of my favorites:
Westfork Trail – This one is great when it’s extremely hot outside because you cross Oak Creek about a dozen times and most of the trail is shaded. (Make sure you have shoes that can get wet!) Unfortunately, parking is very limited so you want to get there early. There is also a parking fee at this particular trailhead.
Chimney Rock/Thunder Mountain - A few blocks from my home is the Chimney Rock/Thunder Mountain Trail. What is very nice about this one is you can walk through the Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park, a Hindu temple, along the way. There is also a hidden cave up there and a natural, “recliner” chair made from stone.
Bell Rock Trail – This trail is located just south of Sedona in the Village of Oak Creek. Bell Rock is a vortex site so the energy is wonderful. This site has limited trees so the hike is out in the open. Ensure you are wearing a hat, as you always should while hiking.
Cathedral Rock – Another vortex site, and probably one of the most photographed. This is a fun hike and stunning views towards the top. There is one 50 foot stretch that is precarious. You are hiking in a “crack” in the rock at an angle. Hundreds of folks do it every day and have a blast.
Devils Bridge – A big tourist favorite. Parking is limited but folks just park on the road. This is a natural bridge you can walk across. A great photo opportunity!
Airport Mesa – This trail literally loops around the Sedona airport. Thankfully, you rarely see the airport as the trail is just below the rim of the mesa. This is a relatively easy trail and since it loops around, you see 360 degrees of beauty in all directions! Depending where you start or end the hike, you will be at another vortex site at Airport Mesa.
There are a host of other trails and you can look them up online. I like to use AllTrails.com. They also have an App for your phone. Many of the trails permit bicyclists in addition to pedestrians. If you wish to go bike riding, check online which trails offer both.
Since parking at the trailheads has become congested, the City of Sedona has implemented a free shuttle service to many trailheads. Please check out the following website for more details: SedonaShuttle.com.
Another wonderful option is to kayak on the Verde River. It’s not too difficult and the rapids are relatively minor. Worst case scenario is you tip over into the river… and just stand up! The water level varies but it’s generally around 4 feet high. All in a fun days outing. There are several tour operators that take care of all the details for you. I have used Sedona Adventure Tours and was very pleased. There is one trip they offer in which you kayak to a winery. What a great idea! I haven’t done this one yet, but it’s on my list.
Speaking of wineries, there are a host of wineries in the area! Yes, apparently Arizona was a big wine producer before prohibition. It’s been a long slow progress back but there are about 20+ wineries in the area. You can visit them on your own or book a tour. A tour will take care of the driving for you and teach you all about the wines of Arizona. I have worked with Jim at Wine Tours of Sedona. He’s a bit eccentric, incredibly knowledgeable and loves what he does. He also does a host of other tours in the area such as micro-brewery tours and even a chocolate tour! I have secured a discount of 10% with Jim on all his tours. Please call him at 866-445-3732 or visit him on the web at WineToursOfSedona.com and use discount code: SHH
For those who enjoy shooting, there is an indoor shooting range about 25 minutes from the Guest House. I don’t know much about it, but my nephew had a great time there. It’s called the Copper Star Indoor Shooting Range. I believe you can rent equipment on site. You should call ahead for details.
There are a few horseback riding ranch locations in the valley too. I have not been to them, but friends have had a great time on horseback. I have had good feedback from Horsin’ Around in the Page Springs area, about 20 minutes from my Guest House.
Art Galleries and shopping – there are many places to go shopping in Sedona. Of course, there is Uptown Sedona where you can park and walk from shop to shop. Some places are T-shirt shops, Rock Shops, restaurants and Art Galleries. It’s all a mix and you never know what you’ll find!
There is a recreated Mexican Village called Tlaquepaque. They also have restaurants and some very high-end galleries and stores. A wonderful place to walk around and enjoy the morning or afternoon.
The Sedona Heritage Museum, also located in Uptown Sedona, has so much information on the early development of the area and how the early settlers lived. This has indoor and outdoor exhibits.
Jeep tours are a great way to see the magnificent red rock formations around Sedona. They have experienced guides that will give you not only the Sedona history, but often the history of the geological formations too. The largest operator is Pink Jeep Tours. They have a great selection of tours to many different areas. I would recommend checking online too as there are several other jeep tour companies and you may be able to find a more affordable option. If you want to go out and about into the wilds on your own, there are several ATV or 4x4 operators in town. They give you a map and send you out for an adventure. I haven’t done this myself but I have heard some exciting stories from those who have.
If you are looking for a totally private and custom tour option, Sedona Red Rock Adventures may be just for you. These folks don’t pack you in a tour bus but work with you and whatever you may be interested in doing, and will make your trip come true. If you mention discount code: SHH they will give you 10% off the tour price. You can contact them at 866-445-3732 or SedonaRedRockAdventures.com. Yes, these folks also do the wine tours too. I have been very pleased with their service!
I’m sure you can find more things online, but these are my top experiences and/or things I still have on my Wishlist! Of course, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I would be happy to help out.
Restaurants! Yes, Sedona has lots of great restaurants. Most of them are on the expensive side but there are a few affordable places and I’ll start with them. Please check online for exact address, hours and phone number. Sedona closes early so always check the hours of service.
Senior Bob’s – You would think this is Mexican, but it isn’t. Basic (and very tasty!) burgers, hotdogs and fries. That’s it, simple. Located beside the Conoco gas station on 89A.
Chocolate Tree Eatery – Vegetarian, gluten free and organic everything. If you want healthy food, this is where you will find it! Even I could find something tasty on the menu.
Famous Pizza – Just a pizza joint, but I feel it’s one of the best in Sedona. Not far from the house on 89A and Dry Creek Road. I believe they deliver and there’s always pickup. We also have a Domino’s Pizza if you prefer and as you know, Domino’s delivers.
On the pricier side of things, most recommend reservations…
Cuisine of India/India Palace - This Indian restaurant is moderately priced for Sedona. It is family owned and operated and has excellent food.
Mariposa – Very expensive. Fine dining, Latin inspired food. Everyone loves this place and has excellent service. On 89A before the traffic circles.
Dahl & Deluca – Italian food. Very good. My favorite Italian place. The décor is a bit dated, but the food is top notch.
Creekside American Bistro – Yes, American fare done very well. If you are lucky, you can get a table overlooking the creek.
The Hudson – My favorite place for steak. Yes, there are other restaurants that serve excellent steak and are fancier, but this place is moderately priced for Sedona. (Still not cheap.)
The Cowboy Club – This steak house is located in Uptown, the shopping district. Also excellent steaks at an affordable price for Sedona, but very dated cowboy motif. If I’m in uptown, this is my dinner place.
Cucina Rustica – This restaurant is located in the Village of Oak Creek, just a bit south of Sedona. Fine dining with an Italian cuisine.
Judi’s Restaurant and Lounge – A nice family run restaurant with steak, seafood and pasta entrees. Very comfortable with a splash of elegance.
There are many more options to eat out in Sedona. These are my preferred places but you may find a gem I haven’t checked out yet. It’s always fun to explore new places!
Safe Travels!
